Status of MDS 3.0
The Update
The MDS 3.0 project remains underway. The goals of the project are two-fold. Clinically, the goal is to make the MDS more clinically relevant while still maintaining federal payment mandates and quality initiatives. Technically, the goal is to improve technology used in order to decrease provider burden. As part of meeting this second goal, CMS is looking at how a nursing facility accesses CMS, standardizing the MDS terminology and working towards the transfer of MDS information from an Electronic Health Record. The National Validation of the new tool is planned to start in late summer of 2006 with final recommendations occurring in December 2007. The National Validation project is to involve eight states. The states to be involved have not been selected at this time. Validation will occur for both the form and for payment items. Further information about MDS 3.0 is available here.
What Momentum is Doing
Once the technical requirements for MDS 3.0 are published, a change request will be initiated to update the MDS to support the new standard.
